The firm traces its beginnings to 1898 when one of its founders, John R. Browne, began the practice of law in Marion. In 1920, Browne left Marion to become in-house counsel for an Indianapolis corporation. He returned to Marion and, in 1931, formed a partnership with Williard B. Gemmill and John O. Campbell under the firm name of Gemmill Browne and Campbell. Gemmill had served as a justice on the Indiana Supreme Court from 1925 to 1930. His son, Robert A. Gemmill, a former member of the firm, served as President of the Indiana State Bar Association in 1963. Browne’s son, John R. Browne, Jr., and grandson, James R. Browne, both now deceased, were members of the firm.
The firm has continued to flourish since 1931 and is, at this time, the largest law firm in Marion and Grant County. There are currently nine (9) attorneys engaged in the general practice of law in the firm with a combined legal experience of over 240 years. One of the reasons for the longevity of the firm is that its members have always strived to function as a team and to provide prompt, professional, and personal service to all clients. |
